Part VI – School Parental Involvement Plan as required by Section 1118 of NCLB

This section of the Plan must be distributed to all Title I parents.

Parental Involvement:

Describe how the school will convene an annual meeting to inform parents of the school’s participation in Title I and explain Title I requirements, including the 1% set-aside, and the right of parents to be involved.

During the first quarter that the school is in session, Davidson High School will hold its annual meeting for all parents of participating children in the Title 1 School Wide Program. Parents are notified of the meeting through (1) notices sent home by students, (2) school messenger and (3) website notices and public postings in English and Spanish. To assist in providing the opportunity for all parents to attend, one meeting is offered during the school year and held during the month of October. Topics to be discussed at this year’s meeting are:

•Title I school wide participation, its services, and parents’ rights                                   
•An explanation of the school’s curriculum and the state’s content standards
•The school wide plan—e-CIP 
•The school and the LEA parental involvement plans and the annual evaluation of the school Parental Involvement Plan
•School-parent compacts
•Youth Truth surveys
•Parental Complaint Procedures
•What it means to be a Title I school 
•The 1% Set-Aside
•The LEA Title I Plan
•Requesting Qualifications of your child’s teacher
•Notifications of teachers who are not High Qualified
•The process for how all Title I parents may have involvement in the 1% Set-Aside, the LEA Title I Plan, the e-CIP, the revisions of compacts, the LEA and School Parental Involvement Plans, and the Annual Evaluation of the LEA Parental Involvement Plan
•Introduction of Parent Leaders/Contacts
•Timeline for this year’s Parent Involvement Opportunities (including opportunities to share in decision making)

Describe: 1) How there will be a flexible number and format of parent meetings offered; 2) How parents will be involved in the planning, review and improvement of the Title I Program (Note: State the school’s process for how all Title I parents have the opportunity for involvement in decision-making.); and 3) How funds allocated for parent involvement are being used in the school.

The Administration and staff of Davidson High School have a strong belief in the importance of parental involvement. Therefore, we have scheduled other parent meetings, workshops, and conferences for our participating Title 1 parents. The sessions will be offered at flexible times during the day. 	Davidson High School believes in involving parents in all aspects of its Title I school wide program. Our process for how all parents have the opportunity for involvement in decision-making is as follows:  We have three trained parent leaders who have been trained on Title I, Part A, parental involvement, and parents’ rights.  They serve as representatives on decision-making committees and as contact persons for the Title I parents to answer questions about parental involvement and parents’ rights.  They keep parents informed of various committee work and receive input from parents for committee decisions.  They assist in evaluating the parental involvement plan, and they assist in training other parents to be parent leaders.  Title I parents are introduced to the parent leaders at the annual meeting of Title I parents at the beginning of the school year.  We have parent representatives on our school wide advisory committee who were active participants in the development of the plan. In addition, all parents were given the opportunity to review the plan and offer their input before the plan was approved. Parents will be given surveys at the end of the school year regarding the Parental Involvement Plan. Each year, the school wide plan, including the parental involvement plan, is reviewed and evaluated. Results of parent surveys are reviewed by the parent representatives and entire school wide advisory council in determining needed changes.  Parents are also given a timeline outlining various parent involvement opportunities that will take place throughout the year.  Then we remind parents through notices sent home, school messenger, and website notices and public postings in English and several other languages which are spoken at Davidson.
Davidson High School uses its parental involvement funds as follows:  parental involvement pamphlets, parent newsletters supplies and postage, to fund all materials and supplies for our school’s parent training and the parent center
Describe how the school provides parents of participating children timely information in a uniform format and, to the extent practicable in a language they can understand, about programs under Title I, a description and explanation of the curriculum in use,forms of academic assessments, and achievement expectations used, and, if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and participate as appropriate in decisions related to their child's education.

Describe how the school provides parents of participating children timely information in a uniform format and, to the extent practicable in a language they can understand, about programs under Title I, a description and explanation of the curriculum in use, forms of academic assessments, and achievement expectations used, and, if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and participate as appropriate in decisions related to the education of their children.

At its annual meeting of parents at the beginning of the school year, Davidson High School will hold a general meeting where information will be presented about its Title I program, the curriculum, and forms of academic assessments used (AHSGE, EQT, PLAN).  They will also learn about how to schedule parent-teacher conferences and how they can participate in decisions related to the education of their child. Parents will be given a copy of the parent handbook, which includes more detailed information on these topics and a copy of the Parental Involvement Plan.  Interpreters will be provided to communicate with limited English speaking parents.   In addition, documents are provided, to the extent practicable, in various languages spoken at Davidson.

Describe how parents, the school staff, and students share responsibility for improved student academic achievement for participating students (How the School-Parent Compact is jointly developed with Title I parents; how it is used, reviewed, and updated).

Davidson High School’s Parent Compacts were developed through a coordinated effort by the Title I division, school staff members, and our school’s Parent Advisory Committee.  All parents will be given a copy of the compact at our annual parents’ meeting.  The compacts will be explained to parents, and they will be asked to sign the compacts signifying their commitment to working in partnership with the school and their child in ensuring that their child is successful in school.  The first block teachers will be given the responsibility to explain the compact to the student. The school will keep a copy of the compacts for use during parent-teacher and/or student-teacher conferences.

Describe procedures to allow parents to submit comments of dissatisfaction with the Continuous Improvement Plan.

In May of each year, Davidson H.S. brings in its School Improvement Committee to review, evaluate, and revise its e-CIP.  There are two parents on the committee who represent all the parents of the school.  During the review process, all parents are notified of the review through notices sent home in our parent communication folders.  The notices make parents aware that the plan is under review, that a copy of the plan is available for review in the library, website and the parent center, and that parents have the right to give input regarding the revision of the plan.  The notice also states that after the plan is finalized and approved, and a parent finds the plan to be unsatisfactory, they have the right to submit their concerns in writing to the school, and the school will submit their concerns to Central Office at the same time that the e-CIP is submitted.

Describe how the school will build capacity for parental involvement including how parents will be encouraged to become equal partners in the education of their children? (See NCLB Section 1118, requirements for building capacity in parental involvement.)
To ensure effective involvement of parents and to support a partnership among the school, parents, and the community to improve student academic achievement, our school:

(1) Shall provide training for parents of participating children in understanding such topics as the State's academic content standards and State student academic achievement standards, State and local academic assessments, the requirements of Title I, and how to monitor their child’s progress and work with teachers to improve the achievement of their children. (Describe)

Davidson High School will accomplish much of this through its annual parents meeting to be held at the beginning of the school year. At that time, parents will receive an overview of the state  academic content standards, academic achievement standards, and assessments, In addition, an explanation will be given regarding Title I, what services will be offered, and how parents have the   right to be involved in their child’s education. Davidson High School will offer an Open House, wherein parents will be given the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and learn about the individual class assessments and what their role will be in helping their child to succeed.

(2) Shall provide materials and training to help parents to work with their children to improve their children's achievement, such as literacy training and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parental involvement. (Describe)

•Provide parenting classes throughout the year on various topics including, but are not limited to, computer training for parents, working as a partner with your child’s teacher and health and safety tips.

(3) Shall educate teachers, office personnel, and other school staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value and utility of contributions of parents, and in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, implement and coordinate parent programs, and build ties between parents and the school. Davidson High School will continue to work with its teachers through in-services, faculty meetings, and grade-level meetings in understanding the importance of parental involvement and that parents are our partners.

(4) Shall to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parent involvement programs and activities with other federal programs, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children. The following will be available for parents in the Parent Resource Center:   educational pamphlets; computer classes, Internet access.

(5) Shall ensure that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to the parents of participating children in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand. (Describe)

Davidson High School will keep the information up-to-date on our school website Parent’s Corner; quarterly newsletters, phone message system.   Our bilingual teachers will also be available to assist in verbal communications with parents.

(6) Shall provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request. (Describe)

Davidson High School makes every effort to work with parents in meeting their requests as related to their involvement in their children’s education.

Describe how the school will ensure the provision for participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students; including providing information and school reports in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language that parents can understand.

Davidson High School, to the extent practicable, provides opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency and parents with disabilities. In addition, we have a bilingual teacher who is available to assist in verbal communications with these parents. At this time, Davidson High School has no migrant students. Every effort is made to accommodate parents with disabilities. Davidson High School is a handicapped-accessible building.
